Do YOU have to choose between your health and a paycheck?

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

(If you are a musician in Oklahoma, you do.)

Meet Jesse.  Jesse is a musician in Oklahoma.  A non-smoking musician who breathes in enough secondhand smoke during a performance to make him a pack-and-a-half pack a day smoker.

We think that that there is something wrong with this picture – but some in Oklahoma do not feel the same.  They tell Jesse and other talented, hard working musicians in Oklahoma that they “can go and get a job someplace else.”

Follow us on facebook and find out how you and your friends can help other musicans and music lovers be able to Breathe the Music.

Nobody should have to choose between their health and a paycheck!

Rich Gililand wants his workplace smoke-free

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Rich Gililand is a musician from Tulsa, Oklahoma and like other musicians from across the state, he wants his workplace smoke-free.  Sadly, our lawmakers aren’t listening.  They think that Oklahoma IS smoke-free.

If you are a musician, a bartender, a cocktail waitress, or work in a restaurant/establishment with a “separately ventilated room”, you do not have the same protections from secondhand smoke that other workers in Oklahoma currently enjoy.

“I grew up in Tulsa have played music for nearly 30 years and for 30 years smoked about a pack a day. Breathing other peoples smoke in 400 smoke filled bars here and in Canada. In April 2 years ago I under went a quad bypass, at 53 yrs old!!!!!!! Long story short I don’t recomend the method but WHATEVER you have to do to quit, QUIT, and don’t play smoky bars. Still play/write and am releasing my 2nd CD in July I am now a disciple of SMOKE FREE and preach SMOKE FREE at every show.” -Rich Gililand/Musician

Join other Oklahoman’s like Rich and sign on to our petition, because EVERYONE, no matter where they work, has the right to breathe smoke-free air.

Rock on Dwelling Spaces! Thanks for supporting Breathe the Music!

Rock on Dwelling Spaces! Thanks for supporting Breathe the Music from Paula Warlick on Vimeo.

Well – if you are from Tulsa then you probably know about Dwelling Spaces in The Blue Dome District.

What you might not know is that Dwelling Spaces hosts live music – amongst other things! When we were there, a new coffee bar was under construction – there is always something great to be had there.

Truly – once I was shopping there for some Toms for my kid and Ben Folds was looking for t-shirts for his wife and kids.

You never know who you will see there. We attached a link to their website. Go to EVENTS and see what they are going to be hosting next.

Thanks Mary Beth for supporting Breathe the Music.

Enso, Electric Circus and IDL Ballroom are smoke-free

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Thanks Enso, Electric Circus and IDL Ballroom! from Paula Warlick on Vimeo.

In April, we caught up with General Manager Aaron to talk about Enso, Electric Circus and IDL Ballroom in Tulsa’s Blue Dome District and their decision to be smoke-free.

Aaron shares with us that buisness is great. They bring in some great acts and their buisness keeps growing.

If you are ever in Tulsa’s Blue Dome District – this is a great place to check out.

Enso Bar/lounge offers a great place to see live music and hang out with friends. Also part of the same venues are Electric Circus and IDL Ballroom. Always something great happening in downtown Tulsa.

To find out more about this venue, go to: http://www.ensobar.com/

Thanks Dwelling Spaces!

Jimmy LaFave is NOT a second-class citizen, help clear the air in his workplace.

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Breathe the Music wants to thank Mr. Jimmy LaFave for his support!

As a non-smoker, Jimmy’s workplace isn’t always smoke-free. Together we can change that!

Please invite your friends and fellow-musicians to join our facebook fanpage.

Currently musicians are considered second-class citizens in Oklahoma.

Everyone – no matter where they work or perform – deserves to breathe clean air. Nobody should have to choose between their health and a paycheck.

Show YOUR support!

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Nobody should have to choose between their health and a paycheck.  Just ask these musicians.  They can’t do it alone and neither can we – take time to show your support and sign the petition.  NOW is the time to take the smoke out of bars and music venues – so that we can all BREATHE THE MUSIC!

“Here it goes baby!” – Cain’s Ballroom supports Breathe the Music

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa is a great place to see live shows and over two years ago, they decided it was time that they went smoke-free.

They have not regretted their decisions. Buisness couldn’t be better.

More and more musicians from across the country are asking for non-smoking venues. Listen to Chad Rodgers tell about Cain’s going smoke-free and a story about Willie Nelson.   Thanks Chad and thanks to Cain’s!

For more information to find out about Cain’s Ballroom, go to:  http://www.cainsballroom.com/.

Who’s next to support Breathe the Music?

Friday, April 9th, 2010

In June 2008, Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa became smoke-free.  Now patrons can go and see shows in a 100% smoke-free environment.  What is even better is that employees that work at Cain’s can enjoy and work in an environment that most Oklahomans get to enjoy daily.

What most people don’t realize is that a musician (and bartenders and other employees at smoking establishments) breathe in enough secondhand smoke at work to experience the same illnesses as a pack a day smoker.  This isn’t something that we made up – that is a FACT.  Don’t listen to fiction – buisness will not hurt.  Ask Chad Rodgers at Cain’s.

Any musician and/or their spouse will tell you.  Just listen to this spouse of a local musician. “My husband would give anything and I mean anything if people at The Deli could take it upon themselves to step outside….please I want my husband around for a long time…..this goes for all smoking bars.”

Current polling shows that there is wide spread support for Oklahoma to become smoke-free.  Are you one of that 71%?

Take time take action and sign our petition

Together we CAN make a difference!

Thanks – Paula Warlick
